Can a TJ VIN be used on TJ Unlimited build?

Is the VIN actually on the dash? I thought it was on the tub (firewall) and just displayed through a slot on the dash?

I've never had the dash off, obviously.

I'll save you the 3 seconds it would take you to look and find out. It is riveted to the dash with two 1/8" aluminum dark gray rosette rivets.

All those examples are straw man arguments. If they mattered in the slightest then mechanics and bodymen would need to worry about it. Like i was saying,it is the frame and main body structure(tub, cab, etc that matters.

The vin is indeed on the dash not tub for some reason so i guess it could be argued that the dash not the tub is the defining body part on the tj 🤔

I though so too.

@2) Good to know that the jeep pcm is just for dash and lights. What do people use for dash and lighting for LS swap? I may go that route and remove all the jeep wiring.

I'm about to get started on that part in my build thread if you want to check it out.

PCM also controls air conditioning and cruise control (if equipped). But there's ways around that to run all on the GM side while still using the Jeeps controls.

Yes, def. I dont have air conditioning, nor cruise control.

Some states take moving or modifying VIN plates very seriously.

I'm sure that is true. But again, if I don't tell you or them other than on here, how do you or they know? They operate under the assumption that fraud is involved, we are not doing that. We are just trying to get the stuff we own registered and if we don't point out what is problematic, they will never catch it.

Are you and Ricky really going to stand there and tell me that me swapping vin plates between two dashes with the factory rivets is a problem? Even if I told you, him, and them which ones I did, you still couldn't tell.

To add further. I've got one coming up in a few months that I need to swap out the dash in. One is damaged, one is not. I'm swapping the not damaged into the rig to replace the one that is damaged. I'm going to move the VIN tag over with factory rivets. Do I run down to the DMV and follow their rules or do I just keep my mouth shut and send it?

No. I'm standing here saying that registering an lj as a 98 tj is a bad move. And that what fenders or rollbar you use is irrelevant.

Well, 3. TJ, LJ, and GM motor

I read as you were getting the LJ frame and body from separate donors. Does the source for the frame and body not have a title and dash with VIN for it? That seems like it would be the easiest route, as many others have suggested.

He isn't registering an LJ as a 98 any more than I'm registering a 97 TJ Unlimited. What I've done to the tub and frame are irrelevant, it is still titled and registered as a 97 TJ.

How about hood stickers for emissions in states that require them? I had these copied to put on the hood from an 06 after paint and to also pass inspections.

I also had them do the door jamb VIN sticker. He can do exactly the same.

If he takes an lj and puts his 98 dash and plates on it he is indeed registering it as a 98. Will it get noticed? Probably not. Would i bet my money on that? No.

The only point i'm trying to make is that you can get into serious legal trouble moving VIN tags around. If one were to do that I would do as suggested and keep that a secret. If you think law enforcement does not use the internet you are mistaken

Frame and body are from same car. But why pay for new dash? Register, and pay more taxes and plates.. LJ are TJ, and people are extending their TJ to look like LJ, so I don't see the big deal. Plus what if the LJ has a bad title? Gotto deal with that too. Just thinking Out loud

I don't have a choice but to bet money on it because my 97 looks exactly like a TJ Unlimited with a stretched wheelbase which was the whole point. Use the TJ Unlimited top, roll bar, etc. and make it look like an extended wheelbase LJ. Oddly, they didn't exist in 97.

I'm glad to have you send them by. They have no more reason to believe anything said on here than you telling them you retired from being a porn star and have the weiner to prove it. Until there is a reason for them to suspect wrongdoing, they aren't interested.
