Too old to torque

At 67 years old i can not torque the pitman arm nut to the steering box to 185 psi. It sucks getting old.

Quite honestly, I'm a big, strong 45 year old and I don't think I could do that either...lol.

I figure for a trail repair, I'll try to torque it as high as possible and then I'd roll it into a shop to have them finish up for me, if I ever had to replace one.

Well, you should torque it to 185 ft-lb, maybe that's easier? :ROFLMAO:

Seriously though, I know what you mean! I'm not quite as old as you are, but the arthritis in my hands has seriously affected my grip strength in the last few years. As others have mentioned, mechanical advantage is your friend! Just be careful using a cheater bar on a torque wrench. If the bar makes contact in the wrong places, it can screw up the adjustment mechanism. Don't ask me how I learned this...

Edited to add: I'm too long-winded, once again. Mhass responded while I was typing my book above... :ROFLMAO:

Getting old ain't for pussies!!!
The arthritis in my dominant hand has made me ambidextrous over the last few years. Sadly, I can't even close my right hand fully anymore. On the plus side, I can now do almost anything with my left hand also- learned out of necessity! The first time you try wiping with the wrong hand and things go bad, you learn real quick!

If Quizzes are Quizzical what are Tests ?

Your signature line brings me back to high school biology, way before woke and harassment were on the radar. My biology teacher, who was also the football coach, used to open the school year with a little speech that went like this:

Throughout the year, I'm going to occasionally spring a surprise quizzy on you, but don't worry, you'll always have plenty of time to prepare for my testies, because they're hard.

The guys always groaned, and the girls that got it dropped their jaws, but most didn't get it.

Thanks, my signature line came from a picture in a text I got from my 15 year old son German teacher. She wanted me to see what my son wrote on the white board.

I texted back it was funny.

Remove the handle from your floor jack, I'm assuming we all have one of the 3 ton HF specials. Slide that bad boy over the torque wrench and have at it. If all else fails, hit it with your purse.

That would be sacrilegious, I’ve had that snap on torque wrench for around 40 years. Besides the fact all the adjustment settings are on the bottom. If it was my 3/8 drive craftsman from the same era I would think about it.

Get you one of them Hobo Freight specials. Mine seems to get me within a few clickity clacks of the proper torque and they're relatively inexpensive.

On a side note, you got any pictures of that 40 year old Snap On sweetheart? I like seeing old tools.

Or get one of these, which is how I plan to torque mine:

I'm just bragging! Mine's military surplus, and I would not have paid for one ($1500+). I did some fab/welding for a neighbor and he paid me with this. It didn't work, but I sent to to a service center and got it operational for about the cost of a good "normal-sized" torque wrench.

Few weeks back a co-worker was out on vacation so I had to step in an assemble his tool for a test. It was so hot it had to be done that Friday, so it could sit and wait until the following Thursday, but I digress. I got to use this bad boy. Its a six footer, I've never seen anything like it. It threads together in the middle. and goes to 1200ft/lbs I believe. We were only going to 350ft/lbs, but it was cool using it.

Side note, one of the other guys helping only weighs about a buck fifty, it was kicking his butt. I've got more "ass" so it wasn't to hard.

Guys... do not use cheater bars on a torque wrench, and only use the extensions if they came with it... That is a good way to invalidate the torque applied to what you are working on... If you need more leverage, get a longer wrench, or use something to load the wrench at it's fulcrum point (usually indicated by an indicator of the handle) This is the center point of where to apply your force. (in center of your grip)
