My Install of the Toyota Light Mod

Try turning on the high beams and shutting the lights off.

Did. All combinations.
Maybe I'll try bypassing the inline relays and just run off the switch. My neighbor thinks it's because of daytime running lights but neither my TJ nor the kit has or was meant for vehicles with DRLs.
Otherwise, I love these lights.

Does your tj have DRL? I thought Canda wrangler had DRL's?

I think maybe you have something connected wrong. You don't really need to run the harness it comes with if you are using stock 55w bulbs. You can run the lights without the harness to see if it's the harness that's the issue.

I'd try that next. The 55/ 60 watt bulbs that come with the kit are the same wattage as the sealed beams. Just plug the factory connectors into the new lights.

Tried to install today but didn't get very far. The headlight retaining bezels from the Oracle LEDs installed by the PO are too small for the Toyota headlights.

I assume I need stock headlight retaining bezels? Has anyone else ran into this issue?

Also, where exactly are y'all mounting the relays?

I have the same issue, mine are just too small.

Also has anyone concluded if you really need the harness? I installed mine but if it’s needed I’ll consider taking it off

Once again, if you're using the bulbs that come with it, the 55/ 60 watt bulbs, NO you do NOT need the harness! The original sealed beams lights were 55/ 60 watt, the same power.

is there a “better bulb” that you would want to use it for? Just curious, otherwise I’m pulling the harness back out

I run a 80/ 100 watt bulb in mine. There is also a 100/ 130 watt bulb. I have a harness like that for my Jeep, mainly so as not to run too much wattage through the Multi Function Switch. But unless you're using one of those bulbs, you don't need the harness.

These are perfect if you are staying H4.

Some folks have luck with LED aftermarket bulbs. I didn't. If you were to switch to an LED replacement you probably could skip the harness.

I have those and they are great, I should grab some spares Quadratrack is out of stock right now though. It amazes me to see the 2 packs of Sylvanias at the box stores for $50 & $60.

When I had the Toyo kit installed I bought three sets of those bulbs.. they were $2.99. Still have them.

LED bulbs don't work for our application. They don't put the light where it need to be.
I have the same experience with the Hella bulbs from Quadratec. There have been several times I was ordering something from them and was a few dollars short of free shipping. Adding a pair of bulbs at $2.99 got me spare bulbs and the free shipping. And I've yet to replace one.

That was my experience. A really good housing/lens/pattern went to shit with a chinesium bulb. Label it LED or put a blue tint on it and people go ga-ga.

I have a few things in my Q-Tec Wish List for just to get over the shipping hurdle.

You might not need the relay harness to run the housings in the kit but you may get less voltage drop with it. I had higher voltage and brighter lights with the harness. And it just seems smart to take the load off the old factory setup.

What bulbs did you wind up using? I haven't experimented with brighter bulbs yet

I left the harness in when I switched to LEDs just because of the isolation relays.

I tried a bunch of LED bulbs in the Toyo kit.. hated them. The 80/100 Hella's were functionally great and paired well with the Toyo housings. Priced right too.

If your original wiring is worn or corroded, yes you can get improved voltage with the harness. I measured my voltage just out of curiosity when I installed mine, and gained nothing. But as you suggest, it DOES run less power through the MFS.
I use a 80/ 100 watt bulb from Hella.

If anyone needs them I found them on Amazon for more. Depending on shipping from quadratec the total cost might be the same.

Hella H4 100/80 W
