Hello!
Had my dana 35 regeared and found worn out spider gears. I know i can change them without taking the carrier out.

BUT: i have another carrier laying around, with trac-lok. If im not an idiot. Can i swap the carrier without it effecting the regear job the shop did?

Take out locking pin, push in axels, remove c-clips and remove axels and take carrier out.
Swap ring gear to trac-lok carrier and repeat process in reverse? Pinion is never touched so pattern should be the same?

Or is this more of a specialist job then i think? ( I have taken a dana 35 a part before)

You would need to measure backlash on the current setup and then possibly need to shim the carrier left or right to maintain proper backlash with the new carrier. If you’re lucky, the two factory carriers might be close enough in dimension and end up working without any shim work, but solid chance that won’t happen.

This is also assuming that the TL carrier you have lying around is the correct carrier break for the ratio you have, meaning it’s 3.55+ if that’s what your regear ratio is.

They are both 3.55+
I know the one i have in there is without shims and the one i have laying around came out without shims ( took it out my self) but good spot! Doesn’t sound like the biggest job, and something i can attack my self. I have a ton of spare shims from the regear

You’ve gotta have some sort of shim in there currently. From factory, the Dana 35 has around 0.320” of shim on the carrier. The carrier would be sliding back and forth without them. Have any photos?

Yes that was there, left side. I ment extra shims. My bad :0)

.

Gotcha. Well, the carriers are machined very close to the correct size. There is a chance that the carrier will fit up close enough to work with no added shimming. Just don’t expect it to turn out that way. If you land in the backlash spec after, run it.
