Can you just remove a flex plate from a 4.0 engine and put a flywheel on it so I can bolt up a manual transmission to it?
I believe you'll need to add a pilot bearing to the crank.
Yes a flywheel will just bolt up but as above you'll also need to install a pilot bearing for the manual transmission's input shaft.
I was just saying I'm doing a complete rebuild and putting a new crank in, so I should be good.... Thanks for the feedback
It's pretty straight forward. Just look at the pic above and compare to what you get from the shop. If it's not there, tap over in and bolt up your flywheel.
Would it be the same pilot bushing any 4.0 manual would use, or something custom to make a 4.0 automatic motor work in a manual jeep.
Different years of manual have Different input shafts. Do your research when ordering a pilot bearing
I've never seen a difference in any of them that work in the TJ 4.0 crank. Which ones are different because I'm missing something?

Older ax15s use a different size pilot bearing.i don't know much about the peugot transmissions except to avoid them.It is an 88 commanche, not a tj.
As a side note the 258/4.2l has a different size recess in the back of the crank so the spacer must come from an amc v8 to adapt to a newer ax15 if i remember right. I should have been much better about recording part numbers with my stroker
