Gas station robbery that ended with bystander killing suspect was staged as part of visa scheme: police

An armed robber who was shot and killed by a bystander was only pretending to hold up a couple in a twisted, ongoing plot to get nonimmigrant visas, according to officials charging an alleged accomplice with felony murder.

Rasshauud Scott, 22, was seen on surveillance footage late Jan. 27 running up to a couple filling up their car at a Chevron gas station in Houston, Texas, according to court documents shared by Fox News Digital.

After seemingly robbing the pair of a purse and wallet, he turned and ran — before an alarmed witness pulled out a gun and shot him in the head, killing him, the affidavit notes.

However, a series of messages later showed that Scott wasn’t even really robbing the couple — with his widow, Sade Beverly, telling cops it “was a set up” as part of an ongoing crime ring, the docs said.

His alleged accomplice, William Winfrey, 30, told Scott the fatal robbery would be the “usual gas pump s–t,” telling him to “make all that s–t look real,” according to the affidavit.

In a police interview, one of the pretend victims “confirmed that the robbery was in fact a set-up, and the purpose of the scheme is to obtain a U-visa,” the affidavit said.

That refers to “U Nonimmigrant Status,” which is granted to victims of certain crimes who have suffered mental or physical abuse and are helpful to authorities investigating or prosecuting suspects.

Police then realized there was a “pattern” of similar reported robberies — and that the victims “had applied for, or been granted U-visas due to their status as victims of these crimes,” the affidavit said.

Winfrey was arrested Wednesday and charged with murder in connection with Scottt’s death. He was denied bond Monday.

He admitted in interviews under oath that he and Scott had carried out “staged robberies” for around a year “in order to obtain a U-visa” for the people in on it, the affidavit said.,

Scott’s fiancée, Sade Beverly, said she now has to raise their two kids alone.

“He didn’t deserve what happened to him at all. He was making a dumb decision. I’m not defending him, of course, but he didn’t deserve to die,” she told Fox 26.

Beverly said she knew what he was doing was wrong, but argued that he should have his day in court.

“Somebody still lost a life at the end of the day. Have some decorum,” she told the outlet. “It would have eventually caught up to him, and he would have had to learn the hard way. He just took him out. He didn’t get the chance to fix his mistakes.”

The woman also said the “real issue” is lax gun laws.

“They need to change. I don’t see how people are able to say it’s OK to take somebody’s life. It’s never OK,” Beverly said.

She also called for the bystander who shot her husband to be charged.

The shooter, later identified as Jesus Vargas, initially fled, before handing himself in and telling cops he opened fire because he feared for his life as well as those of the pair he thought were being attacked and held up at gunpoint.

“He’s the one behind the trigger. He’s the one who made that decision,” Scott’s widow told Fox 26 of Vargas.

Police said Vargas was not involved in the fake robbery and was released, ABC 13 reported.

No decision was immediately available about possible charges against him in connection with the shooting

There also are no records indicating whether the fake robbery victims have been charged.

Family members were told around 11 a.m. that skeletal remains had been found and authorities believe they are Rounds’.

“The FBI assisted the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office by processing the area for evidence and recovering the remains. The remains are in the possession of the Utah Office of the Medical Examiner for confirmation of identity,” the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office posted in a statement on Facebook. “Our hearts go out to the family of Dylan Rounds. We offer our sincerest condolences for the loss of their family member. We understand that the pain of their loss is immeasurable, and we want to express our deepest sympathies to them. No, the real issue is criminals doing crimes. I think this situation is the very definition of "F around and find out."

“They need to change. I don’t see how people are able to say it’s OK to take somebody’s life. It’s never OK,” Beverly said.

But it's apparently okay to stage fake robberies to get people visas under false pretenses. I mean, she did stand by and watch him do it for a year...

“He’s the one behind the trigger. He’s the one who made that decision,” Scott’s widow told Fox 26 of Vargas.

I'm pretty sure there was a bad decision made earlier by her fiancé that started that train wreck of a situation.

And finally, the shooter may not be faultless in this. As gun owners, we don't have carte blanche in these situations. There's a right way and a wrong way. No information was given to indicate which way the shooter chose...

A 1938 copy of the comic that "introduced Superman to the world" has sold for a record-setting $6 million, the auctioneer that handled the purchase said. According to Heritage Auctions, the rare copy of Action Comics No. 1 was sold to an anonymous buyer on Thursday. The $6 million winning bid makes the book the most expensive comic to ever sell at auction, the action house added. Heritage Auctions hails Action Comics No. 1 as "the most important comic ever published"—noting that the Superman who first appeared in the 1938 spring issue "remains remarkably like" the version still seen in comic strips and on the big screen today, the AP reports.

I used to hunt, I support hunting, I have no qualms with anyone who hunts. I cannot figure out for the life of me why someone would think this is ok though. Its fucked up and cruel. Wolf or not.

The guy is a moron and should be treated as such.

Several years ago we were at a bar in a middle of nowhere town of about 200 eating pizza with the kids. In walked this guy with a dead turkey and he was showing it off because it was his wife's first turkey kill. It was weird enough that he thought bringing a dead animal into a place where people are eating was ok but it at least was already dead and didn't have to go out back and be killed as a defenseless animal.

ST. GEORGE — Firefighters responded to a teen who was stuck in the mud in the Virgin River in Bloomington Monday evening.

Station 8 firefighters in the SunRiver area received the call around 7:30 p.m. and were sent to a part of the Virgin River north of where Brigham Road connects to the trail along the south side of the river.

What firefighters found was a teen boy whose legs were stuck in the muck beneath the surface and could not get out.

St. George Fire Battalion Chief Tyler Talbot said he wasn’t sure how the boy got stuck in the river, whether he was “playing around” or got stuck in a patch of quicksand. Whatever the case, a handful of firefighters and Gold Cross Ambulance medics worked to dig and pull the boy out as either friends are family members watched.

At one point, as the boy began to be pulled from the mud by one of the firefighters, he groaned and repeatedly said, “I can’t do it,” until he was set down again.

In the case of quicksand, which Talbot said was likely what they were dealing with, the Encyclopedia Britannica notes, “Physicists have calculated that the force required to extract your foot from quicksand at a rate of one centimeter per second is roughly equal to the force needed to lift a medium-sized car.”

Firefighters were eventually able to remove the boy from the river and carry him to the waiting ambulance.

Talbot said the boy complained about being cold and having pain in his lower extremities. While he was checked by Gold Cross Ambulance paramedics at the scene, Tablot couldn’t confirm if he was taken to the hospital for further care.

The temperature of the Virgin River this time of year is usually between 50 and 60 degrees, according to the Washington County Water Conservancy District.

Quicksand along the river

Pockets of quicksand can exist along the Virgin River up into Zion National Park, said Washington County Sheriff’s Sgt. Darrell Cashin, who oversees the Washington County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team. However, incidents of people getting caught in it are rare.

“It’s not like in the movies,” said Cashin, referring to scenes that depict people either dying or nearly dying from sinking into quicksand over their heads.

Human bodies are more buoyant and will float on the top rather than sink to the bottom, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica.

“If you do find yourself stuck in quicksand, the best idea is to lean back so that the weight of your body is distributed over a wider area,” Encyclopedia Britannica further states. “Moving won’t cause you to sink. In fact, slow back-and-forth movements can actually let water into the cavity around a trapped limb, loosening the quicksand’s hold. Getting out will take a while, though.”

Both Talbot and Cashin advise people who recreate in the vicinity of a river or outdoors, in general, to do so with a companion. That way someone is on hand to help get you out of the mess or contact others who can.

One of St. George News’ own reporters recently had an experience with quicksand while visiting Lake Powell and can be read about here.
